A system of yoga that is built from asanas (yoga poses), pranayama (breathing exercises). Hatha can be seen as the root of other yogas. Originally the purpose of hatha yoga was to train the body so that it could remain seated for extended period of time while meditating.
Today hatha yoga is a popular form of exercise for both the mind and body. The asanas are held for many breaths allowing the body to engage with the posture. While it may appear relatively gentle hold postures for extended periods can give the muscles and bones of the body a good work out.
Hatha can give raise to an extremely mindful practice, being in the moment captivating the mind and the body in the form of the asana. Many who practice hatha find it a very spiritual experience.
